“Easy…” He said, kneeling in front of her. “I will not harm you.” He reached his hand in peace offering. The girl lowered her glance. She studied his palm, looking for the ruse. “With me you are safe, but I can’t promise that you will be safe behind this corner. If you care about your child, please allow me help yourself.”

The girl raised her glance, ready to reject his offer, when suddenly she froze. She wasn’t sure, what made that she changed her mind. If colour of man’s eyes or that what she read in them. And that were a feelings so familiar to her broken soul that even not thinking, she instinctively reached her fragile hand, covering his palm. Jakow helped her stand up. He embraced her body, protecting from baleful look and leaded her to his house.

The key last time turned in the lock. He grabbed the handle, pushed the door and montion of his hand, invited inside. She looked at him insecure.

“Don’t be afraid.” Said Jakow.

Flat was small. It was composed of small hall and room that during the day served as salon and during the night was a bedroom. To the room clinged a kitchen’s indent with sink.

The girl stood in the middle of the room and with interest looked around.

“Wait here.” Said Jakow, pointing the bed and then he moved his steps towards the door. Outside, he leaned over the door and wiped his face nervously.

What you do? What you do you fool? Then he raised his head and as if he had an epiphany, he looked at adjusted to his flat door. He swung and knocked.

Silent. He knocked one more time, waiting for the answer. Suddenly from the room came noise. The door opened and Jakow saw in the doorway a young man. His hair was messy and shirt stuck out from his pants.

“You studied medicine.”

The man frowned his forehead.

“Yes, why are you…?”

He didn’t end, because strong hand clenched around his arm, pushing him out from the room.

“Mr Jakow…” Mutterd the man, when Jakow opened the door to his flat. “Mr Jakow… What’s happened?” Jakow pushed him inside and closed the door behind his back. Student stood back to the salon, waiting for the explanation, when from Jakow’s face he read that in the flat were someone else. He stiffened and very slowly, turned back, waiting for the worse, when suddenly he saw sitting on the bed woman, who held baby.

“Good evening.” He said, nervously fixing his hair and lowered his head.

“Good evening” Answered the girl after awhile.

“Do you know anything about children?” Asked Jakow, passing him.

“Children?” Said the man, raising his head and looking at Jakow. “Usually, I have contact with old people, but I will look what I can do. May I?”

Jakow shrugged. “Of course.” He went to the room and being close to the girl, he leaned, studing the baby.

“What’s wrong with him?”

“From three days he have high fever.” Said the girl, raising her eyes.

The young man touched baby. “Warm.” He whispered. He rolled up child’s clothes and saw small, red pimples.

The girl looked at him quizzically, waiting for the answers, but it wasn’t spoken.

“We need bowl of hot water.”

Jakow nodded.”I will boil it.”

“That will help?” The girl turned to the young man.

“I hope so. What’s your name Miss?” He asked, when Jakow full pot.

“Nathalie…” Answered the girl.

The young man’s face brightened.

“Nathalie… That’s a very pretty name. And what are you thinking Mr Jakow?”

“About what?” Said Jakow, putting the pot on the fire.

“Nathalie… do you like it?”

Jakow’s eyes swept from man and rested on the girl.

“I like.” The girl felt she was blushed.

“My name is Nikodim.” Said the young man, smiling to her.

“Nikodim… also pretty.” She said, turning towards him.

The man waved.

“I don’t like it.”

“It contrasted with my profession.”

The girl arched her eyebrows.

“Because you see, St. Nikodim is a patron of gravedigger.”

Jakow laughed.

Nikodem looked at Jakow reproachfully.

“There’s nothing funny here Mr Jakow.”

“Don’t tell me Mr Nikodim, that you, well-educated man, believe in such superstition. Even I, a simple man, don’t believe in it.”

“Mr Jakow what are you saying?! You have to believe! You have to believe in something! Otherwise what sense have life?”

“That’s right. I believe. I believe in myself.” Said Jakow and turned toward pot, which top raised with influx of steam.
