Mary is a single woman, about 30. She lives with her cat Thomas in her parents house. Her father died when she was 7. Her mother passed away a year ago. Mary’s mother always bear a grudge against her mother (Mary’s grandmother), that she couldn’t lived how she wanted to. She wanted to protect her daughter (Mary) from the same miserable life, but she couldn’t make it.
After mothers death the only reason what kept her alive is her cat Thomas that she loved dearly. But today is extremely painful day. She couldn’t bear the emptiness of her life in this cheerful time of year. She is tired waiting the day when death finally come for her so she decided to embrace the death herself. Climbing to the rooftop she noticed many people who possessed shining smile. “Ah, yeah”, she remembered,” Today is New Year”, but it doesn’t mean anything to her because she didn’t feel hope not even fear from jumping. She closed her eyes and she was ready to free herself from this cruel world but one word change everything “Stop”. She opened eyes and saw handsome man with messy black hair and green eyes like Thomas.
Sitting there, with a carefree attitude while smoking his cigarette.
“can’t a person have a moment for himself? Just when I am about to rest for a bit ” the man sigh irately and raise up on his two feet and light out the cigarette butt he just throw with his shoes.
“oi, woman what are you trying to do?” his presence surprise Mary that she almost slip off from the balcony.
But a hard powerful force swiftly grab her hand and pull her over, “damn it, I almost had a heart attack!” he angrily told her without realizing that he had her embrace in his sturdy chest.
Without another word, Mary tears fall from her cheek.
“w-what!? Hey hold on now. Why are you suddenly crying!?” he asked panicky but Mary herself didn’t knew why she was crying.
After a few moments, she finally stops crying while the messy hair man watches her swiping her tears with the handkerchief he gave her.
“t-thank you” Mary weakly thank him and now that she got a clear look at him, Mary was once again awe at his deep emerald green eyes.
“what are you doing here, lady?” his voice seems softer from before but he still have that stir look on his face “aren’t people like you suppose to be with their love one or something during this kind of day?”.
“I don’t have anyone” Mary softly replies “what?” he asked but once again he couldn’t hear her “if you want to say something speak up, I can’t hear anything with that kind of reply”
Irritated by his words something snap inside Mary “I said I don’t have anyone! Why is everyone else happy while I am at home alone with no one but my cat! T-that why I thought that I should just go and jump off this building but some idiot just stop me!” she angrily answer while gasping for air.
“whoa you got a serious problem lady. Just killing yourself for that kind of reason” he gave a weak reply that somehow piss her off.
Who the hell does he think he is!? Mary thought furiously.
Not only did he halt her from killing herself, now he making her angry.
That’s it! I am going to kill myself somewhere else, she told herself and quickly raise up and walks away before the same force that stop her from falling grab her “where do you think you are going?” the man asked suspiciously without letting her go.
“Were you thinking of doing the same thing somewhere else?” he interrogated.
Mary grit her teeth, irritated at having been found out so easily by a complete stranger. “It’s none of your business,” she retorted. “Now if you’ll excuse me—” She tried to escape once more, but the handsome stranger’s grip remained firm.
“Actually, it is my business,” he replied, tone matter-of-fact, “considering the fact that your dear mother assigned me the task of protecting you, and all.” Mary thought she detected a hint of sarcasm in the word “dear”, but was immediately sidetracked by the mention of her mother.
How did he know her mom? And what did he mean he was supposed to protect her?
“Look,” Mary started, all too aware of how close they were standing to one another, “I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing here, but I don’t need protection. Especially not from a person I’ve never even met up until a few minutes ago.”
The stranger shook his head as though Mary were even more of a disappointment now than when she’d been planning to jump off the building earlier. “‘Just met’? I must say, I’m insulted. Do you honestly mean to tell me that you don’t recognize your own cat when you see him?” When Mary’s expression remained blank he gave an exasperated sigh. “It’s me. Thomas. I didn’t want to have to do this considering how long it’s been since I was allowed to be in my human form, but it seems I have no other choice.”
The stranger closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and in the blink of an eye Thomas—the cat Thomas—was in his place.
Gasping, Mary instinctively took a step backwards in surprise, unaware just how close she had been standing to the building’s ledge as she lost her footing. Mary’s arms pinwheeled as she tried to regain her balance, searching for something—anything—to grab onto, but it was too late. She could already feel gravity tipping her backwards towards her doom…
And that’s when the human version of Thomas rematerialized before Mary, seizing her by the upper arm and saving her life for the second time that night. Thomas’s mouth twisted into a playful smile, barely restrained amusement dancing in those green eyes of his. “Looks like you weren’t quite ready to die after all, huh?”
“H-How did you—?”
“Because a curse was put on me,” he answered before she could finish.
“Curse?” Mary echoed. She seemed to be restricted to using only broken up sentences in her shocked state.
“Oh, did I not mention it before?” Thomas said, cheerily. “Your mother was a witch who put a curse on me,” he informed her. “And you’re a witch too. There’s no time for dying now. This adventure’s just getting started.”
Keeping a firm grip on Mary’s hand, Thomas helped her back to the rooftop floor,
“Hold on for sec, would you? A course, whiches, Thomas… What a nonsense are you talking about?” Mary was still trying to recover. “This is not happening” though to herself.
“Non-sense? I’ve been taking care of you this whole time, keeping you company ensuring you’re safe and sound” replied Thomas with a bitterness tone.
“I must be dreaming…” Mary whispered. ”Why would you take care of me?”
“Again? Agnes, your mother, I’m in doubt with her.” Thomas answered with a lost look. Then silence, both Mary and Thomas felt awkward.
“How am I supposed to believe all this?” Mary thought out loud, she started to fell anxious, kinda dizzy, something was wrong. Thomas eyes changed to an even more green.
“I knew that this was not going to be easier to explain, anyway, I’ll show you” Thomas sigh while making eye contact with Mary.
“Mother what’s this all about…? Mary passed out in Thomas arms.
Thomas grabbed her hand and in a matter of seconds they were running like mad through those “stairs of death” she climbed up moments earlier.
‘This is crazy’ – she thinks. But her hand was harm, and so she let him guide her to god knows where, hoping the place they were going would be so far away from the lonely and cold, cold world.
And when she was getting out of breath, he stooped, so suddenly that Mary found herself with her nose glued to his back.
– What th.. – Well, that was NOT very ‘far away’. – Why are we at home?
A gloomy place. There was not a better way to describe that rundown house, with a single flower at the doorstep.
Thomas picked up the substitute key she hid in the flower pot and said:
– Now, I guess it’s time, heh.
And turned the lock three time to the left. Why the left? She was about to say that when the lock clicked and the door opened itself.
At this point, the human-cat tuned around with a grin on his face, and green eyes looking for excitement on her face.
Time seemed to slow down when that stupid old door that refused to open and close smoothly every single morning turned bright red, and showed her a huge mansion entrance with all kinds of strange creatures running around and talking to each other. Then, time returned to normal, the live inside the mansion stopped, and everyone was looking at her.
– Aren’t you happy you didn’t jump? – said Thomas, still with his grin, and still with green-eyes, but now, with a tail and much, much smaller.
Mary opened her eyes, the sunlight was timidly lighting up the room. She looked up to see Thomas looking comfy on her bed, beside her, everything was as usual. She sighed and laughed, “It was just a weird dream after all” she told herself. As she moved to get out of bed, Thomas stretched and yawned.
—Good morning baby. she fondled his head —I had a weird dream tonight, she said, the cat stared at her with attention. She got up and headed to the kitchen, Thomas followed her. While preparing breakfast, she took a deep breath, inhaling the aroma of just brewed coffee, it smelled like home, like life, like a new chance with a new day and she was truly happy she didn’t do what she decided to do the night before.
“Coming to think of it, I don’t remember much about last night, recapping: I planned to…” she couldn’t say the word “—and then I…”— she stopped talking ‘cause the only part she remembered onward was the dream she had. “—And then you found out who you really are” said a husky male voice with a chuckle, her shocked look lied upon a man wearing nothing but a white towel, his toned chest exposed, hypnotizing green eyes focused on her.
—W-w-who are you?!! —asked her in exasperation. —What? This again? Not remembering me for the second time…seriously, you’re too much to handle.” The man said with a sarcastic tone as her eyes widened with the assumption that…could it be that the dream was not a dream? What?!
She got back from her confusion as Thomas softly caressed her hair, she looked at him and immediately blushed “Oh, you remember now? By the way, I’m taking a shower now, wanna join me?” he said with a playful smile. “Thomas?!!! No!” cried a scarlet-blushing Mary, he smirked and stepped into the bathroom murmuring it’s been a long time he had taken a proper hot bath. Mary stood in shock wondering what would happen to her life from now on.
“What do you mean? Curse? Witch? Hold on for a second, am I dead now? Or am I having a hallucination?” She blurred it out while completely taken aback by his statement. “Hey, calm down! Don’t panic, you still not dead yet. I will explain it later but firstly, can you get up from me?” He said it with a poker face. “Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t realise that.” She was trying to get up but staggering on her feet. Watching that situation, he sighed. “You are such a problematic girl” he said it while lifted her up in a princess hug. “What are you doing? Put me down, I can walk by myself” while struggling in his embrace. “No, you can’t. Stay put or I will drop you.” Having no energy after being through a rough and shocking night, she stopped and just stay still. He walked to the living room and put her down on the sofa. Then, he went to the kitchen and brought out a glass of water. “Drink and calm down.” He said it with a monotone voice. “I have calm down, now tell me the situation. Who are you? Are you a human? Why you can change into Thomas? Are you an incarnation? What is the deal with my mother? Whatt-t…”Her questions was stopped when he put his fingers on her lips and continued “Waaa, you sure a talkative person. How long have you not talk with other people? Don’t always talk to cat, but please speak with a real human out there.” Mary pouted when hearing that. “Okay, now let’s go to sleep. It is time for me to change into Thomas anyway.” “Hey, you still don’t answer my quest…” She did not managed to finish her last sentences as he already lifted her again and brought her to her bed. “Hey, talk to me! Don’t just do whatever you want.” He put her on the bed and brought his face closer and closer to her while whispering “We will spend our whole life together so don’t worry I will answer your question later.” Shocking with his bold movement, she turned to another way with a blushing face.
“A witch?” Mary asked in confusion.
“Yes, a witch. How long will it take to process that in your head?” Thomas said as he sighed.
Mary, realizing how his story did not make any logical sense, took her arms from his grasp and walked briskly away from him and towards the door.
“Hey, wait! Did you even hear what I just said?” Thomas exclaimed as he chased after Mary.
Mary felt a hand grasp her shoulder which irked her more than ever, so she slapped Thomas’ hand away from her as she turned around facing Thomas.
She put her index finger against his hard chest, and gritted her teeth.
“Listen here, I don’t care what game you’re playing right now but you’re not fooling me. I’m not some dumb woman who would believe your crappy skills to scam a woman who just want nothing but to jump off a roof and die peacefully. I don’t know how you got your information about me but you better stop or I will call the police and report you. You here me?!” Mary shrieked while Thomas instinctively leaned backwards and his faced morphed into shock.
She turned around and quickly paced towards the rooftop door.
“Hey, listen! I’m not joking around with y-” Thomas yelled but before he could finish his sentence, Mary quickly opens the door and slams it shut as she left him in astonishment.
After a few seconds, Thomas recovers and scratches his hair in irritation.
“How in the world will I handle a woman like her?
Mary’s thoughts swirled and she started pacing on the roof.
The dusty cauldron in the attic. The strange recipe books with the scary ingredients. Her mother and grandmother fighting over the “path” Mary should take. It all made sense now.
SHE IS A WI- No.. Who was she kidding. She couldn’t believe she trusted the strange man for even a second. This was probably just some illusion. A magic trick. Some man was trying to make a fool out of her. But no that can’t be right. You can’t just poof into a cat. That’s not possible. Her thoughts were such a great muddle. Absolutely nothing made sense
Thomas, or at least the man claiming to be Thomas, watched her with a slightly amused look on his face.
“Ah yes you do that when you think. Stop walking sweetheart,” he grabbed her hand and pulled her close, “save your energy for the spellbooks. You have a lot of work to do, you see. You have to make sure I never turn back into a cat again, you have to permanently break your mother’s curse”
His face was close, really close. Mary looked into those green eyes, freckles with golden dots, so much like Thomas’. She spoke slowly and deliberately, this was all still too much to take in and she needed more proof.
“But how do I know… that you’re really Thomas and not just a man-witch or cat-witch or whatever who’s just transforming to look like my cat”
His eyes glinted mischievously as he said, “Well not a lot of other people know about the cute little poodle shaped birthmark on your butt do they? I find that personally offending as a cat, mind you.”
Blood rose to her face when she realized Thomas has seen and Thomas knows everything, ALL of her secrets. His expression said what he didn’t, “You break your mother’s curse, or else”
“Oh and I’m a warlock by the way.” He cheerfully added.
“What do you mean by adventure? A — and what do you mean by my mum was a witch? Why did she never told me anything?” Mary asked. Her brain cannot process all Thomas said in her shocked state.
“Well, sometimes , some things are better left untold. I’ll tell you later when it’s time. It’s getting chilly out here, why don’t we go inside? I’m hungry”,replied Thomas and transforms into a cat.
They head inside and Mary feed Thomas his favourite tuna. After finished feeding him, she gulped down a dozen of beer out of frustration and fell asleep on the sofa.
Thomas walked to her and sighed “This owner of mine, can’t she behave more like a proper lady? This is why she never got a partner”,mutter Thomas and carefully carried Mary to her bedroom.
The next day in the house begin with Mary’s scream.
“W-witch? …Adventure? What do you mean?”, Mary stuttered out.
“Uhh … a witch – you know – like the ones in fairy tales that cast magic spells and fly on brooms … except you don’t need a broom. That’s just something stupid that humans made up.”
That wasn’t very helpful, Mary thought to herself, but regardless, it was obvious that Thomas was something supernatural … or maybe she was becoming mental. If she was being delusional, she thought that she might as well hear it out, indulge in her own crazy fantasies for a bit. There was nothing for her in this world. She might as well enjoy the delusions her head created for her.
“… and what do you mean by adventure?” she murmured.
“Oh, sure! I’ll explain. This is going to take a bit though, so why don’t you come away from that hazardous place?” Thomas beamed. He took Mary by her hand and pulled her away from the rails. While walking towards the door face forward, he began to speak.
“We’re going on an adventure to find it! It’s about time that the seal on it becomes undone. Your mother searched for it forever, you know. She spent years and years journeying across the world, scavenging ruins and fighting off enemies in pursuit of it. And then she finally found it, but in the end, she lost hold it to another person. One thing and another happened, and that other person ended up sealing it in some place unknown to the rest of the world. The seal made it impossible to find it and magic was cast so that IF it were by some minute chance found, itwould be immediately teleported to another unknown place. However, the seal is weakening! So we have a chance of finding it. But I can’t move on my own because of this darn restrictive curse, so I need you with me, Mary.”
Thomas turned his head and looked seriously but softly into Mary’s eyes. “You can’t die, alright. I need you and your witch powers.”
He spun back around and proceeded down the stairs of the tall building with Mary’s hand in his.
“And I’ll have you know that … “, Thomas continued but stopped as he felt Mary pull back her hand.
“What’s up, Mary?” he asked, looking back at Mary. Mary had stopped moving completely, face facing downward. Her hair covered any facial features that could’ve otherwise been seen. Her arms hung without motion.
“Was everything a dream”. Mary said while rubbing her eyes. “Thomas where are you”. She stood up and tied her hair with a rubber band, got down on all fours and took a peek under the bed.
“Slap”. It was the sound of someone spanking her. “What are you searching for” Said Thomas with a grin on his face. “Come on, put your clothes on. I need to show you something.”
“W-witch? What are you saying?!” she exclaimed in disbelief. “Me? A witch? Please, I’m already 30. I don’t have time for this foolishness!”
Thomas let out a chuckle. “Haven’t you noticed? You have hardly changed since your early twenties. Your mother, as well, maintained her youth well. Do you not find it strange?”
Caught in surprise, she paused. Couldn’t it be due to other causes? Isn’t it just a coincidence? Yes, yes. This man is out of his mind. “A-and so? What other proof do you have? I am just a normal girl with no talent or skill. There is nothing special about me, so please find someone—“
“What a stubborn girl,” Thomas says as he extends his hand towards her. “Here, close your eyes.”
Irritated yet curious, she takes his hand. As her eyelids flutter shut, a freezing gust of wind passes by. Taken by surprise, she immediately opens her eyes wide. They were no longer on the rooftop. What was once her house is now flat land covered in snow. The night sky was dark and calm and the air crisp and cold. In the far distance, there was nothing but snow in sight.
“Don’t just stand there! Follow me,” Thomas says, grasping Mary’s hand tightly.
